History of Rongbuk Monastery
Nyingmapa Lama Ngawang Tenzin Norbu founded the Rongbuk Monastery in 1902. Since the 18th century, there is a community of nuns Meditating in the area. All the area around the monastery and in the great valley of Dzakar Chu you will find dots of Meditation caves. This monastery is an important pilgrim destination for the Sherpas from both sides of Himalayas. It is the Lama from this monastery who gave the name for the baby Tenzing Norgay, who later submit the Mount Everest.

Unlike the Everest on the Nepal side, on the Tibet side in Shigatse prefecture, there is a paved road right up to the Mountaineer basecamp further up towards the lap of Mount Everest. You can access the Monastery and the Tourist basecamp by road after 2 or 3 hours drive from the Friendship highway From Shelkar or Tingri.
About 20 to the Monastery, all the tourists will have to change the bus to Eco-bus. There is an Eco-bus service to reduce the impact of carbon emission from our vehicle to the Himalayas. This bus will take you right up to the tent guest house. This viewpoint is far better than that of the Nepal Side.
