Everest Basecamp in this website refers to the tourist base camp at the foot of Everest in Tibet. It has become a trendy tourist destination in Tibet for both trekkers and travellers. As being a guide, We have visited the Everest Basecamp of about three fourth of all the tours we undertake in Tibet.

Everest Region

Mount Everest is known as Qomolangma in Tibetan. About 27000 Square km of the territory around the Mount Everest Basecamp in Tibet have been designated as the Qomolangma Nature Reserve. For foreign travellers, this region offers a magnificent view of Everest and the adjacent mountains of Himalaya. Approach for China side provides better vistas and its easier access as a motor-able road all the way up to the Everest Basecamp.

The popular tours to Everest Basecamp is a two or three days trekking from friendship Highway. Most of my friends prefer to do seven days Everest base camp tour from Lhasa to Kyirong and continue into Nepal. The road up to the Everest Basecamp is comparably better than in mentioned in your guide books. As you escalated upwards the Base camp you will need to take a zigzag road to the spectacular point with the view of Himalayas. The altitude of Everest base camp is 5200 meters above sea level.

Rongbuk Monastery at the Everest Basecamp is a very popular night stay for many travellers. The monastery serves as the emergency shelter for the travellers during the uncertain heavy snowfall which may cause road blockage. The monastery was found by a Nyingmapa Lama in 1902. the monastery is a spiritual centre for the Locals in the region. The murals in the monastery are superb, and it’s worth taking some times to visit inside the monastery. the monastery has a stupa. View of Stupa and the Everest standing tall into the sky makes a very good photography spot.

Tent Camp

There is a group of tent lining on the side of the road between Rongphu Monastery and the Everest Basecamp. these are the tent run by Tibetans from a nearby village as the hotel to make some money. The tents are made of Yak fur. This camp would be an only opportunity for many travellers to stay in Tibetan tent made from Yak fur, unless if you are travelling to Namtso and Reting region of Lhasa

The Tent can hold only the smallest numbers of travellers if yours is a big group, your group might need to divide into a different tent. So please do not forget to ask your guide to make a call to book the tent if in case of a big group. every guide has a friend there and yours should be able to make a booking. All the tent has a stove to cook your meals. Do not touch the stove-pipe, its hot and it will burn your hand. Some tents may get smoky and the only option is to change the tent.

Every tent offers breakfast in the morning, please ask your travel agent for B&B arrangement at the Tent. the furthest tent offers the best view of Everest. Many tents have an in-house shop, please buy some to show your appreciation for the hospitality offered warm heart in this low resource high land. We always do not measure the service they offer with the money we gave. We always bring something for them. We would suggest you bring some stationary or thick cloth at least for your host family.

Everest Basecamp

From the Rongbuk Monastery you can only go up about 200 Meter. There is a tablet on which word Qomolangma Base camp and its altitude is written in English and Mandarin. Thats is you maximum limits towards the Mount Everest. But the Mountaineers and trekker with special permission can go up as much as there are permitted.  Your travel agency in Tibet can help get those permit from the Tibet mountaineering association.

Everest Ecobus

1st June 2019 marks the beginning of new Green Ecobus service to Rongbuk Monastery and Everest Basecamp. All those Ecobus are run on Electricity produce in local hydropower station. This Bus Service is started by local government to reduce the Impact and carbon emission of the cars at the Mount Everest Natural reserve. All the Travelers will have to change their car to the Ecobus 20 Kilometer before arrival at the Rongbuk Monastery. The bus service is frequently and with minimum disturbances to your journey.

If you are drive an electric Vehicle, you can drive right up to the monastery, but no further.

Dangers and Preparations

Whether you are trekking to Everest Basecamp or travelling in the car, please remember, you are going to a very remote area above 5000 meters above sea level. Therefore, please do not assume the climate in Everest would be as exact as it is in Lhasa and other sites in your itinerary.

We understand many travellers are coming to Tibet to visit the Mount Everest basecamp. But it is not always guaranteed to have a view of the mount. Especially during the monsoon season, the mount may shy away from you in the cloud. So plan your tour carefully and if you plan to travel to Tibet in monsoon season, have a good day for acclimatization in Lhasa and addition, you might need to adjust your journey to give you a better chance to reach there on a better day.

Before leaving Lhasa or Shigatse, please ask your guide and the driver about the preparations you will have to make before heading towards Everest Base Camp. In the Everest region, climate changes many times a day. Therefore, please have a thicker coat, preferably wind stoppers, at your disposal.

If your Tibet travel agency provides you oxygen tank, please see if you might need it further. If you do, please ask your guide to refill it before heading forward. The shop on the way up and at the tent camp do sell the small oxygen can. But it is more expensive than that of towns and cities. So consider buying some as you need.

Some Tents in the Mt Everest basecamp may get smoky in the night; please decide on the tent before everyone goes to sleep. Sleeping in the smoky tent at a high altitude of 5000 meters above sea level is annoying. Click here to find our Mt Everest basecamp tours.
