Unlike people from Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwanese have to get a Tibet travel permit to travel into Tibet. It is mandatory, and you cannot enter Tibet without one.

Besides a similar Name, this Permit for Taiwanese is hugely different from the Tibet Travel Permit for International Visitors. The Tibet Tourism Development Bureau, also known as the Tibet Tourism Bureau, issues the Tibet Travel Permit for International Visitors. The Taiwan Affairs Office of the Tibet autonomous region issues this permit for Taiwanese travelers.

Another visible difference is that the tour details on the permit from the tourism bureau are machine-printed. At the same time, an officer at the Taiwan Affairs office will manually write all the information on the Taiwanese travel permit.

Lastly, all the international travel agencies in Tibet have the authority to apply for Tibet travel permits for foreign travelers. Only a handful of Travel agencies have the authority to apply for this permit.

There are two documents required to apply for this permit.

1. You must submit either a Valid Taiwanese identity card or a Taiwanese Passport with more than six months of validity.
2. Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents. The Exit and Entry Administration of the People’s Republic of China issues this permit.

We can complete the application process for this permit within 18 business days in fine days. Yet, it is best to apply a month in advance.

Besides Lhasa prefecture, if your tour plan includes additional regions of Tibet, You will need to consider adding seven extra days to permit if you visit the Mount Kailash region. Add two days if you visit border areas like Mount Everest or travel overland to Nepal.

1. Flight from other Chinese cities to Tibet: If you are flying from any major Chinese city to Tibet, you will need an actual copy permit. Therefore, we must send the permit to your hotel before your Tibet flight.
2. Train from other Chinese cities to Lhasa: If you are taking the train to Tibet, you do not need the original permit. Therefore, we will send you pictures of the permit for you to print. They will check for this permit at the train station. But if you are taking the train from Chongqing to Lhasa, you will need the original permit for the flight.
3. Overland Travel from Nepal or Direct Flight from Nepal to Lhasa: If you are taking an overland journey or flying directly from Kathmandu to Lhasa, we will send the permit with your tour guide at the border. At the border, our tour guide will assist you in checking out.

Please remember, like for foreign travelers, independent Travel is not allowed for Taiwanese travelers in Tibet. Your tour must be arranged with a local travel agency in Lhasa, with a tour guide and private vehicle. We are well-versed in arranging tours for Taiwanese travelers in Tibet.
