Chokpori is the hill on the right-hand side of Potala Palace and straight in front of the Jokhang Temple. The name Chokpori means the Iron hill. Chokpori hill is the soul hill of Vajrapa? The mountain looks like a tiger jumping up to the sky, and it is said to contain minerals such as iron and gold. Many tantric masters are said to have meditated here on it, especially the Great yogic Thang thong Gyalpo the one who initiated the Tibetan opera is stated to have mediated here too. You can see his statue on the right hillside of Potala Palace.

During the reign of Fifth Dalai Lama, due to the failure of many wells know doctor’s attempt to build their medical institutions, he found the institution of Tibetan traditional medicine called a Medicinal Land for the well-being of sentence being at the Chokpori. There was two small spring on the Chokpori hill. the one o the northern side of the hill, this spring is a reserve for the Kitchen of Dalai Lama. the spring has a wall surrounding it and only the person in charge of fetching the drinking water has access to the water. The water from His private spring flows out from the channel toward the north and that is where people can only access to the water. There is another spring on the eastern side of the hill this is the local residence of Zhol village and Drak-lha-Lu-gu (the temple on the eastern side of the Chokpori).

Now a day on the northern edge of the Chokpori hill there is a Photographer spot. Taking a picture from the spot is a must to do for the most photographer, and there will be a crowd of domestic and international tourist every morning to take a picture of the sunrise over the Potala. In the summer, it is advisable to be at the spot for the best shot at around 5 am local time and in the winter at 8 o’clock the sun will hit over the Potala Palace. The view of the Potala Palace has been popularly depicted on our currency of fifty Yuan note of the People’s Republic of China.

If you go for the Lingkhor, the greater the circumambulation of Lhasa, you will reach the western part of the hill. The area is known to Local as the Thousand images of Buddha, sang-gya-tong-ku, this is where then gigantic Buddha image is carved along with lots of others Buddha. There is a quadrilateral shape pagoda before you walk down toward the giant Buddha image. This pagoda is recently built, and it is a pile of stone slabs on which the local devotees and craftsmen carve the entire teachings of Buddha. During the holy month of Saga Dawa, this area is full of locals praying and prostrating. Please do not disturb their prayers and if you are taking the picture please bring the lens with a zoom over 500 mm as your photo shot will not disturb their prayers and you will get a real good Picture.
