Shishapangma Basecamp in Tibet is just 45 Kilometers from the marvelous Peiku Tso Lake and 120 Kilometer from the Tingri Town in Western Tibet. A day tour to visit the basecamp can be easily added to any tours to Mount Everest and Mount Kailash tours. The Mount Shishapangma Basecamp is genuinely a secret kept, which not many people know or read about. The Panoramic views from the Shishapangma Basecamp are far better than anywhere else in Tibet.
Shishapangma Basecamp offers a great vista of 14th Highest peak and numerous other peaks above 6500 meters nearby, including Phurephu Ri (6846m), Langtang Ri (7205m), Porong Ri (7292m), and Kang Benchen (7299m). Making it one of our favourite places of one day hike and camping.
Like Mount Everest Basecamp and Cho Oyu basecamp in Tibet, The Shishapangma Basecamp can be reached by road. The road is excellent and paved up to the basecamp. Many people are unaware of the basecamp leave alone getting there. In the area, wildlife is abundant, including wolves, Gazelle, wild ass, and Himalayan Griffons.
About Mount Shishapangma
Mount Shishapangma is the 14th Highest peak in the world at 8,013 meters above sea level. It is the only above 8000m peaks located entirely inside Tibet Autonomous Region. Other 8000+ peaks like Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu sit on the border of China and Nepal.
The Mount was first summited in the year 1964 by the Chinese Team. Due to the Stricklands regulation on the foreigner to enter into Tibet in the ’50s and ’60s, It was the last 8000+ Meter peaks to be submitted. Only a few people visiting Tibet heard about the stunning mountain of Shishapangma and hence mostly miss it.
Even if you don’t drive up to the Shishapangma basecamp, you can get a magnificent view of Mount Shishapangma along your way to the Nepal border or along the way to Mt Kailash in western Tibet from Mount Everest Basecamp.
The Local Tibetan name of the Mount is not Shishapangma. If you ask the locals about it using the name, they might point to the different Mount. The Local Tibetan Name of the Shishapangma is Phola-Gonchen.
