Shugseb Nunnery is located 16 kilometers west of Lhasa. As you drive from Lhasa airport to Lhasa downtown, You can see it. This Nunnery is a significant site for Buddhist pilgrims and highly recommended for the Meditation. History of the Shugseb Nunnery
The site has initially been consecrated by the yogini Machik Labron, who mediated in the caves of Shugseb, but the first retreat cave was established by Gyargom Tsultrim Senge, a student of Phakmodrupa and the founder of shugseb Kagyu order ( A suborder of Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
From the 14th Century, the shugseb has been an essential center for nuns of Nyingma school, owing to the teaching of Longchen Ramjampa at the nearby Gangri Tokar. The female incarnation of Shugseb, the Shugseb Jetsunma, ranks one of the highest female incarnations of Tibetan Buddhism.
Currently, about 80 nuns live in huts around the main temple. The Nunnery is well connected with the main road.
Tourist Guide to Shugseb Nunnery
The drive from Lhasa to the Nunnery will take about an hour due to the curved road. The road to the Nunnery is newly paved. You will have to hike about an hour to the Meditation cave of the Longchen Ramjampa. From the Meditation cave, you can have a distance view of the inner Himalayas and Mount Norjin Kangsar. On the right side of the Cave, there is spring water. This spring water is said to be the manifestation of breast milk of Deity Vajravarahi.
