History of Norbulingka
Before the establishment of the resort palace of Norbulingka, the very location was full of wild animals, there was a small spring and there are lots of bird singing the melodies. Due to lots of wild animals and the quietness of the place, it is called the masked deer park.
During the time of fifth Dalai Lama, he is said to have put up a tent and celebrate the bathing festival in the mask deer park. When the seventh Dalai Lama was residing at the Drepung monastery, he is said to have spent summer days in the park.
After taking the political responsibility of the regional Tibetan government, he has developed arthritis. So the seventh Dalai Lama has built bathing facilities in the park, The water was said to have a medicinal value which treated his illness.
Later in the year 1755, he built a two-story Palace on the left side of the bathing facilities and gave his name to the Palace, as it is called Kalsang Prodrang.
From that time, it has become the School for young Dalai Lamas and the summer palace after assuming the political and religious authority of the Regional government of Tibet.
Eight Dalai lamas have built the pond and pavilion on the pond, the yellow fence, also he plans lots of tree and plant which makes the Palace a very beautiful park of Norbulingka. Later every successive Dalai Lama has extended and built their own structures.
