Why Tibet Travel Planning Is Different From Other Destinations

When planning a tour to Tibet, the first thing you need to understand is that it is not like other travel destinations. Traveling to Tibet requires a guided tour and Tibet travel permits, both arranged by a local, licensed travel agency, preferably a local Tibetan travel agency like ours.

Independent travel is not allowed for International travelers in Tibet. All foreign travelers must be part of an organized tour by a licensed local Travel agency in Tibet. They will have to arrange a Tibetan tour guide, a private vehicle with a Tibetan driver, and a Tibet tour itinerary.

This means your planning journey to Tibet involves a few key considerations.

Permits: Several types are required for travel to Tibet. The places included in the tour itinerary clearly require an additional permit.
Transportation to Lhasa: You can fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu and from all major cities in China. A train ride is also a great option. There are regular trains to Lhasa from all the major cities in China. You can also choose to do an overland tour from other parts of China to Tibet. The most popular overland route is from Shangri-La in Yunnan to Lhasa, and from Lhasa to Kathmandu via the Friendship Highway.
Tour type: though you have to be a part of a guided tour. You can choose whether to do this tour as part of a private or group guided tour. A private guide tour means it will be just you, your friends, and your family. And a group tour means we will have many other people joining, making it cheaper for travelers.
Timing of visit: Traveling to Tibet during the high season in summer can be more expensive, but the Mount Kailash area would be closed in winter due to extreme winter conditions. Traveling to Tibet in winter for destinations like Mt. Everest Base Camp, Shigatse, and Lhasa is a very good time to see authentic Tibet. Until the entire Tibet has a closed season or a regulated access window.
Budget: Besides the tour price, which includes all major costs in Tibet, you will have to factor in flights to Chinese Cities or Nepal from your home, and a train or flight to Lhasa. The Tibet permit is usually free, and we don’t charge extra for issuing it or for sending it to your hotel before flying into Tibet (from the Mainland).
Tibet tour itinerary: Your tour in Tibet can range from 4 days in Lhasa to 30 days. We don’t usually stick to a few tour plans for our clients to choose from. We will ask you how many days you have in Tibet and which places you would like to visit. Based on the information provided, we will create a custom design tour plan tailored to you. The Permits You’ll Need — A Quick Overview

A Tibet travel permit is an official authorization to visit. It is issued solely by the Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa. This permit is sometimes called the Tibet Visa. Regardless of your nationality and the origin of your travel, you must secure the permit before entering the Tibet Autonomous Region (Xizang).

You will need to have the permit in your hand when boarding flights or trains to Lhasa. Therefore, we will have to send it to your hotel in other cities in China. We can only deliver it to you at the Chengdu airport/train station or the Xining train station. Otherwise, it is recommended to book a hotel for a night, and we will send it to your hotel.

Besides the basic primary Tibet Travel Permit, you may need additional permits depending on your destinations in Tibet. The following are additional permits you may need.

Border Permit:

A border permit is required if your tour plan involves the border region. If you are flying internationally from Nepal, consider an overland tour to and from Kathmandu, and visit border areas such as Mount Kailash, Mount Everest Base Camp, and Kyirong.

Military Permit:

The Military is required only if you are visiting Mount Kailash or certain places in Lhoka Prefecture, such as Nagartse. This permit takes at least a week, which is why the Kailash permit takes the longest to complete.

Aliens Travel Permit:

This permit is issued by the local public security bureau at the prefecture level. Currently, this permit is required only if you are visiting Tsanda County to see the Ruins of the Guge Kingdom, Dungkar Piyang, and Tholing Monastery. You can make this permit at the public security bureau office in Darchen.

It will take about 5-7 working days to make a basic permit. Border permits can only be obtained during a single visit. The entire permit process for Kailash takes about 20 days, including the additional time required for the military
