About Us

The primary purpose of sharing this story of my family is to share how this travel agency has developed over the span of a century by three generations of a Tibetan family in Lhasa. Here I have shared the adventure stories by father and grandfather that have helped me become a tour guide and later run this agency to welcome visitors from abroad to show and experience a real Tibet.

My Grand Father

My beloved grand father start leading mule caravan in year 1940s for a Lhasa base Nepali trader call Shamokarpo (The shop is still in business in barkhor market). He is the first person in our family lineage to explore and travel extensively to Yunnan, Kalimpong (India), Nepal and Bhutan.

During my childhood, he would tell us stories recalling his journeys and exploration of different regions of the Himalayas, under a tree in our courtyard, sipping yak butter tea and biscuits. As his grandchild, we were very much fascinated with his stories about the iron bird (airplane) and the iron snake (train).

My Father

Later in the 60s, my father used to travel to different regions of China, including different areas in Tibet, Xinjiang, and other Tibetan inhabited areas of the plateau as a business person for his co-operative society. His tales were like Wild Wild West stories, with nomadic experiences and full of adventure. He would tell us about the ancient routes he traveled on the Silk Route and how he met different cultures and traditions on this route.

In the late 1980s, my grandfather started helping to train new tour guides and travel agencies in the English language and understanding the culture of the world, when Tibet was opening up to international travelers for the first time in history. Which later leads to the founding of our family’s first travel agency called Tibet World International Travel Service in 1997.

My Story

Under the influence of my father and my grandfather, I started working in tourism as soon as I completed Master’s in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work ⚕️ from abroad.

I started as a tour guide leading tours to every region of Tibet, then became a permit boy for our family agency, and later owned my own agency. It’s been two decades ⏳ of my personal experience in working in tourism and welcoming international travelers to visit Tibet for an authentic Tibetan experience like no other.
